Dear Readers: PROXIMITY is on vacation (& going through some life changes). Please stay tuned -- we will be back!

The Zen of Weeding [garden]

I know my vegetables. I know each of them. Spend hours here each week on your hands and knees, and you will know what it means to commune with your food.

Food & Politics [kitchen]

Food is power. Food is political. And if it’s true that we are what we eat, I’d much rather be a vegetable garden than a factory farm.

Finding Roots [home]

Home is the tangle of my mother’s northern roots. Home is the pull of my father’s southern tide. Home is complicated: part-beauty, part-conflict. Home is learning to be still.

About Us

Three writers, two countries, one hour. Each week, we choose a different place that exists in each of our three locations: a bus stop, for example, or an emergency room, or a family dinner table.

Over the course of one hour, we find a story. Then we share it with you.

Over the course of one year, these stories will form a collective whole, illuminating the surprising ways in which our worlds are uniquely different and remarkably the same.
