Dear Readers: PROXIMITY is on vacation (& going through some life changes). Please stay tuned -- we will be back!

The Zen of Weeding [garden]

I know my vegetables. I know each of them. Spend hours here each week on your hands and knees, and you will know what it means to commune with your food.

The meaning of America [street stall]

An urban hot dog stand: part livelihood, part miniature microcosm. America as seen through the eyes of a sausage-selling street preacher. An unexpected lesson in the art of being real.

After Dark [park]

Night is the time for ghosts. Some of them live here, at the park around the corner.

Lake Monona [water]

Our love for our lakes might be killing them.

Passing [memorial]

I checked my email in an attempt to procrastinate. The subject line was simple, the message brief: Judith Strasser died in her sleep; it was peaceful. I barely knew Judith. Yet news of her death left me grabbing my coat and heading for the door.

Gods of Frolic [freestyle: dog park]

A de facto dog park in all respects, it is absolutely unofficial, and technically, illegal.

About Us

Three writers, two countries, one hour. Each week, we choose a different place that exists in each of our three locations: a bus stop, for example, or an emergency room, or a family dinner table.

Over the course of one hour, we find a story. Then we share it with you.

Over the course of one year, these stories will form a collective whole, illuminating the surprising ways in which our worlds are uniquely different and remarkably the same.
